A pop-top roof gives you standing room when you need it, a double bed above your head and a van that still fits under most height barriers when the roof is down. It is the single upgrade that turns a van into a usable camper fastest, and it is usually done in one day.

Before you book
Tell your insurer
A pop-top is a modification. Let your insurer know before you drive away. Specialist campervan insurers cover pop-tops routinely; some standard van policies do not.
It will not change your V5 on its own
DVLA guidance lists a high-top roof as a motor caravan feature but says this does not include a pop-top elevating roof. Reclassifying your van as a motor caravan depends on windows, a side door, graphics or an awning bar, plus fitted seats, a table, a bed, cooking and storage.
Leased or financed van?
Cutting the roof is a permanent change. If the van is leased or on finance, get the finance company’s permission first.
Roof condition
The roof is checked before fitting. Rust, old holes or previous repairs in the cut area can affect the job, so mention anything you know about when you enquire.
Roof bars and accessories
Anything on the roof now needs to come off. On VW Transporters your own bars can be refitted, or new bars supplied; on other vans ask us what is possible.
Never drive with it up
The roof must be down and secured whenever the van moves, and the roof bed is for sleeping when parked only.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a pop-top roof cost?
From £2,200 inc VAT for a VW Transporter T5, T6 or T6.1 SWB, £2,400 for mid-size vans such as the Renault Trafic, Vauxhall Vivaro and Peugeot Expert, and £2,550 for the Ford Transit Custom. Pop-tops for large vans such as the Ducato, Crafter and Sprinter start at £2,550. The roof bed is included. Extras such as a mattress, spotlights or colour coding are added on top, and your exact price is confirmed before you book.
How long does it take to fit a pop-top roof?
Standard roofs are fitted in a day. You drop the van off at 8am and collect it the same evening. If you choose a colour-coded roof or larger extras, we will confirm the timing when you book.
Is the bed included?
Yes. Every pop-top includes the roof bed. A memory-foam mattress is an £85 extra, and on most vans a bed extension is available for £80.
How many people can sleep in a pop-top?
The roof bed sleeps two adults. With a rock-and-roll bed or seats that fold flat below as well, a pop-top camper can sleep four.
Do I need to tell my insurer about a pop-top roof?
Yes. A pop-top is a modification and your insurer needs to know before you drive. Specialist campervan insurers cover them routinely.
Will a pop-top roof let me register my van as a motor caravan?
Not on its own. DVLA guidance counts a high-top roof as a motor caravan feature but specifically excludes pop-top elevating roofs. Reclassification depends on other external features, such as side windows, a habitation door, graphics or an awning bar, plus fitted seats, a table, sleeping, cooking and storage inside.
Will my van still fit in car parks and garages?
A pop-top sits low when closed, so the van stays close to its standard height. That is the main advantage over a fixed high top. Exact closed height varies by van and roof, so if you need to clear a specific barrier or garage, tell us the measurement and we will check before you book.
Can I drive with the roof up?
No. The roof must be down and secured whenever the van is moving, and the roof bed is only for use when parked.
Can I add solar panels or keep my roof bars?
A 160W solar panel charger can be fitted for £570. On VW Transporters your existing roof bars can be refitted for £40, or new black or silver bars supplied for £170. On other vans, ask us what your roof can take.
Do I need to pay a deposit?
A £500 deposit secures your fitting date. Your full price is confirmed before you pay it.
Can I get a courtesy van while mine is being fitted?
Yes. A VW Caddy can be hired for £50 a day, or a VW camper for £70 a day on weekdays. Drivers must be 25 or over with a clean licence.
Where is the work done?
The work is carried out near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Within easy reach of the M62 and M1. Send us your enquiry and you will get a confirmed price and fitting date, usually within 1–2 working days.
