Where you sleep shapes the whole van. The bed is usually the biggest single piece of furniture in a conversion, and the decision that drives the rest of the layout — fixed or folding, across the back or down the side, storage underneath or a garage for bikes and gear. A well-designed bed system gives you a comfortable place to sleep and turns the space beneath it into usable storage, all cut to fit your van. As part of our campervan furniture kits, we’re building CNC-cut bed systems at our Darwen workshop, near Blackburn.
Types of bed system
Fixed beds
A fixed bed is always made and ready — no folding down at the end of the day, no shuffling cushions. It usually sits across the back of the van with a large storage area or “garage” underneath, ideal for anyone who wants comfort and simplicity and doesn’t need the floor space back during the day. The trade-off is that it takes a permanent footprint, so it suits longer vans best.
Folding and rock-and-roll beds
A folding bed gives you the space back during the day — a sofa or seating by day, a bed by night. Rock-and-roll bed frames double as travel seating with belts, which suits smaller vans and anyone who wants a camper that still works as day-to-day transport. It means making the bed up each night, but you get far more usable living space in return.
Bed-and-storage platforms
A raised platform bed with drawers, a slide-out or a full garage underneath makes the most of a van’s height — you sleep up top and store bikes, boards, camping kit or tools below. It’s the classic layout for active builds where the van has to carry gear as well as people.
Storage is half the point
In a van, every surface has to earn its place, and the space under the bed is some of the most valuable you’ve got. A bed system designed properly turns that space into drawers, a garage or accessible storage rather than a dead void. We design the understorage around what you’ll actually carry — and around your kitchen and other storage so the whole interior works as one.
Cut to your van
Bed width, length and height all depend on the van, and a few centimetres either way is the difference between a comfortable bed and a cramped one. CNC-cut bed systems are designed to specific van models, so the frame uses the full width available, clears the wheel arches, and leaves the right headroom above and storage below. When the range launches, bed systems will be offered by van model so the fit is right from the start.
Part of a full kit, or on its own
A bed system works as part of a complete furniture kit alongside your kitchen, storage and seating, or on its own if the bed is the part of your build you most want done right. If you’d rather we fitted it, we can, as part of a full or partial conversion.

Fixed bed or folding bed — which is better?
Neither is better outright — it depends on your van and how you use it. A fixed bed is more comfortable and always ready but takes permanent space, so it suits longer vans. Can I get storage or a garage under the bed?
Yes — that’s one of the main benefits of a raised or fixed bed. The space underneath can be built out as drawers, a slide-out, or an open garage for bikes and larger gear. We design the understorage around what you’ll actually carry.
Will it fit my van?
CNC-cut bed systems are designed to specific van models so the width, length and height suit the vehicle properly. When the range launches it’ll be organised by van model, and registering your interest tells us which models to prioritise.
Can I order just the bed?
Yes. The plan is to offer full kits for a complete interior and individual elements — like the bed system on its own — for people who only need part of the build.
Can you fit it for me?
Yes. The systems are designed for a competent self-builder to assemble, but if you’d rather we installed the bed for you, we can do that as part of a conversion at our Darwen workshop.
