The Transit Custom has become one of the UK’s favourite camper bases: comfortable on the motorway, well equipped and usually cheaper to buy than a Transporter of the same age. A pop-top roof makes it a genuine four-berth camper without losing its everyday usability.
There are two very different generations. The first ran from 2013 to 2023, with a facelift in 2018. The second arrived in 2024 with a new body, and it takes its own roof. The new body is shared with the 2025 VW Transporter T7.

What to know about the Transit Custom
2013–2023 Custom: £2,550
One SWB roof fits the first-generation Custom, before and after the 2018 facelift.
2024 on Custom: £2,600
The second-generation Custom has a new roof line, so it has its own roof. It is the same body as the new VW Transporter T7.
Long wheelbase Customs
The SWB roof can be fitted to an LWB Transit Custom, but it leaves a gap at the rear of the roof. It works well for many people. Ask to see photos so you know exactly how it will look.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a pop-top cost on a Transit Custom?
From £2,550 inc VAT for a 2013–2023 SWB Transit Custom, or £2,600 for the 2024-on model. The roof bed is included in both.
Can you fit a pop-top to an LWB Transit Custom?
Yes. The SWB roof fits the LWB van but leaves a gap at the rear. Ask us for photos of finished LWB vans before you decide.
Is the 2024 Transit Custom roof the same as the old one?
No. The 2024-on Custom has a new body, so it takes a different roof, priced at £2,600 inc VAT.
Will a pop-top fit the Transit Custom Trail or Sport?
Trim levels share the same body, so the roof for your generation and wheelbase applies. Tell us the exact model and year when you enquire.
How long does it take to fit a pop-top roof?
Standard roofs are fitted in a day. You drop the van off at 8am and collect it the same evening. If you choose a colour-coded roof or larger extras, we will confirm the timing when you book.
Do I need to tell my insurer about a pop-top roof?
Yes. A pop-top is a modification and your insurer needs to know before you drive. Specialist campervan insurers cover them routinely.
Will a pop-top roof let me register my van as a motor caravan?
Not on its own. DVLA guidance counts a high-top roof as a motor caravan feature but specifically excludes pop-top elevating roofs. Reclassification depends on other external features, such as side windows, a habitation door, graphics or an awning bar, plus fitted seats, a table, sleeping, cooking and storage inside.
Can I get a courtesy van while mine is being fitted?
Yes. A VW Caddy can be hired for £50 a day, or a VW camper for £70 a day on weekdays. Drivers must be 25 or over with a clean licence.

Fit more while the van is in
Many customers add other upgrades on the same visit: electrics and solar, windows and rooflights, awnings, insulation and carpet lining, or a full campervan conversion.
