That does not mean a heater will remain at its maximum consumption throughout the night. A correctly sized heater should normally reduce its output or cycle according to the selected control mode once the campervan or motorhome has warmed up.

The eight hour figures show the range produced by multiplying the published minimum and maximum rates by eight hours. They should not be treated as a guaranteed overnight forecast.
A well insulated van may require high output initially and then considerably less power once it reaches the selected temperature. A poorly insulated motorhome in freezing conditions may keep the heater working much harder.

How Much Diesel Does a 2kW Heater Use Overnight?
Using the published range of approximately 0.10 to 0.27 litres per hour, a 2kW class heater could theoretically use:

The higher figure assumes the heater remains close to its maximum published fuel rate throughout that period.
That will not usually happen in a correctly insulated campervan once it has reached a comfortable temperature. The heater may reduce its output, enter standby or cycle according to the controller fitted.
In milder conditions, an overnight total nearer the lower or middle portion of the range may be more realistic. In very cold conditions, or in a large and poorly insulated vehicle, consumption may move closer to the upper end.
How Much Diesel Does a 4kW Heater Use Overnight?
A 4kW heater has a wider possible consumption range.
Using the AUTOTERM Air 4D figures of 0.12 to 0.51 litres per hour:

An overnight total of more than four litres assumes continuous operation at approximately the published maximum rate. That level of demand should not normally be required in a modest, well insulated campervan.
A 4kW heater may be appropriate for:
- A larger coachbuilt motorhome
- A long-wheelbase high-roof panel van
- Several warm-air outlets
- Longer ducting
- Regular cold-climate travel
- A poorly insulated or highly glazed interior
However, installing a larger heater does not automatically improve comfort or efficiency.

Does a 4kW Heater Use Twice as Much Diesel as a 2kW Heater?
Not necessarily.
A 4kW heater can use considerably more fuel when operating at maximum output, but both heater sizes may have similar minimum fuel-consumption figures.
For example, AUTOTERM publishes:
- Air 2D: 0.10–0.24 litres per hour
- Air 4D: 0.12–0.51 litres per hour
The 4D therefore uses only slightly more fuel at its lowest published output but more than twice as much at maximum output.
The real question is how hard the heater needs to work.
A correctly sized 2kW heater may run steadily and efficiently in a medium panel van. A 4kW heater fitted to the same space may heat it quickly and then spend more time at minimum output or switching between heating and standby.
In a large motorhome, the 4kW heater may be the more appropriate choice because a smaller heater would need to work at maximum output for long periods.
How Much Battery Power Does a Diesel Heater Use?
A diesel heater still needs a 12V or 24V electrical supply even though diesel provides the heat.
Electricity is used by:
- The controller
- Combustion fan
- Warm-air fan
- Fuel-metering pump
- Glow plug during startup
- Sensors and control unit
- Shutdown cooling cycle
The glow plug makes startup more demanding than steady running. The heater may therefore require several amps during ignition before settling to a lower normal operating draw.
Published normal running consumption for popular 2kW heaters is approximately 10 to 29 watts. At 12V, that equates to roughly:
- 10 watts ÷ 12 volts = 0.83 amps
- 29 watts ÷ 12 volts = 2.42 amps
Over eight hours, that would represent approximately:
- 0.83 amps × 8 hours = 6.6Ah
- 2.42 amps × 8 hours = 19.4Ah
Allow additional capacity for startup, shutdown and any restarts during the night.
The Webasto Air Top 2000 STC is rated at 14–29 watts, while the AUTOTERM Air 2D is rated at 10–29 watts and the Eberspächer Airtronic S3 D2L at up to 28 watts.
How Much Electricity Does a 4kW Heater Use?
A 4kW diesel heater generally has a larger fan and may move considerably more warm air.
The AUTOTERM Air 4D has a published electrical-consumption range of 10 to 57 watts. At 12V, that is approximately:
- 0.83 amps at 10 watts
- 4.75 amps at 57 watts
If it ran continuously for eight hours at those figures, the heater alone would use approximately:
- 6.6Ah at the lowest published rate
- 38Ah at the maximum published rate
The Eberspächer Airtronic M3 D4R has published consumption of up to 55 watts, producing a similar maximum running demand.
Again, this does not mean it will consume 38Ah every night. It depends on how much time the heater spends at each output.
Will a Diesel Heater Drain My Leisure Battery Overnight?
A healthy, adequately charged leisure-battery system should be able to support a correctly sized heater overnight, provided sufficient usable capacity remains after accounting for other loads.
Those other loads may include:
- Compressor fridge
- Lighting
- Water pump
- USB charging
- Television
- Inverter standby consumption
- Control panels
- Wi-Fi router
- Fans
- Other accessories
The battery’s advertised capacity is not necessarily the amount you should routinely use. Available capacity depends on:
- Battery chemistry
- Battery age
- Temperature
- State of charge
- Manufacturer discharge limits
- Battery-management system settings
- Condition of the charging system
A 100Ah battery should therefore not automatically be treated as providing 100Ah of practical overnight energy.
AUTOTERM states that its heaters shut down if battery voltage falls below the control unit’s permitted level, but the operating time still depends on available battery capacity.
Low-voltage shutdown should be treated as protection against a fault condition—not as the normal way to decide when a battery is empty.
Signs the Battery or Wiring Is Inadequate
The heater may have an electrical problem if:
- It starts only when the engine is running.
- It works on mains hook-up but not off-grid.
- The controller shows a low-voltage error.
- Interior lights dim during startup.
- It begins its startup sequence and then stops.
- It produces white smoke before shutting down.
- The heater works after driving but fails the following morning.
- Fuse holders or electrical connections become warm.
- Voltage appears healthy at the battery but low at the heater.
The problem may not be the battery itself.
Possible causes include:
- Undersized cable
- Excessive cable length
- Poor crimp connections
- Corroded fuse holders
- Loose battery terminals
- Inadequate earth connection
- Damaged heater wiring
- Incorrect fuse or isolator arrangement

What Affects Diesel-Heater Fuel Consumption?
Outside temperature
The colder it is outside, the faster the vehicle loses heat.
The heater must run for longer or at a higher output to maintain the same internal temperature.
Campervan insulation
Insulation reduces heat transfer through the walls, floor, ceiling and doors.
Poorly insulated areas, exposed metalwork and thermal bridges can significantly increase heat loss.
Windows and cab glass
Windows generally lose more heat than insulated wall sections.
Large cab windscreens, side windows and rooflights can increase heating demand. Good-quality insulated screens can make a noticeable difference overnight.
Vehicle size
A long-wheelbase high-roof van contains more air and has a larger external surface than a compact campervan.
A coachbuilt motorhome may also have several separate living areas and more extensive glazing.
Heater sizing
An undersized heater may spend long periods at maximum output.
An oversized heater may warm the vehicle quickly but then operate awkwardly at low output or cycle more frequently, depending on the heater and controller.
Temperature setting
Maintaining 23°C in freezing conditions requires more energy than keeping the vehicle at 17°C.
A moderate overnight setting can reduce consumption while still keeping the interior comfortable.
Door opening
Every time a sliding or habitation door opens, warm air escapes and cold air enters.
Frequent entry and exit can make the heater repeatedly increase its output.
Warm-air ducting
Long, narrow or heavily restricted ductwork can reduce effective airflow.
Sharp bends, crushed ducting or too many outlets can make the heater work harder without distributing heat properly.
Controller mode
Depending on the heater and controller, it may:
- Run continuously at a selected power
- Reduce output as temperature rises
- Enter standby
- Switch combustion off and restart later
- Continue ventilating between heating cycles

How Do You Calculate Your Own Heater Consumption?
Use the manufacturer’s minimum and maximum figures for your exact heater model.
Diesel calculation
Litres used = hourly fuel consumption × running time
For example:
0.18 litres per hour × 8 hours = 1.44 litres
Electrical calculation
Amps = watts ÷ voltage
Then:
Amp-hours used = amps × running time
For a 24-watt heater on a 12V system:
24 watts ÷ 12 volts = 2 amps
Over eight hours:
2 amps × 8 hours = 16Ah
Add allowance for startup, shutdown and thermostat-controlled restarts.
These calculations estimate heater consumption only. They do not include the fridge, lights, water pump or other habitation equipment.
How Much Does a Diesel Heater Cost to Run?
To estimate the fuel cost:
Litres consumed × current diesel price per litre
For example, if a heater uses 1.2 litres overnight:
1.2 × your local diesel price = estimated overnight fuel cost
The electricity cost is less relevant when operating off-grid because the energy comes from the leisure battery. However, that energy must later be replaced through:
- Alternator charging
- Solar
- Mains hook-up
- Generator
- Another charging source
A heater that causes the battery to require regular mains charging still has an indirect running cost.
The overall cost of heating is affected more by vehicle heat loss and the selected temperature than by small differences between established 2kW heater brands.
How Large Should a Separate Heater Tank Be?
A separate fuel tank must be securely installed, suitable for diesel and arranged according to the heater and vehicle requirements.
As a basic planning exercise:
- A five-litre tank could theoretically provide around 20–50 hours for a 2kW heater operating within a 0.10–0.24 litre-per-hour range.
- A ten-litre tank could theoretically provide around 40–100 hours at the same rates.
Real usable capacity may be lower because:
- The pickup may not reach every last part of the tank.
- The tank should not be overfilled.
- Vehicle angle can affect the pickup.
- The heater may operate toward the upper end of its consumption range.
- Some fuel may remain inaccessible.
A separate tank should not be treated as a loose portable container placed inside the living space.
Where practical, many installations use a correctly arranged pickup from the vehicle’s main diesel tank.
How Can You Reduce Heater Consumption?
Improve insulation first
Insulation, cab screens and attention to cold bridges reduce the amount of heat the van loses.
Select the correct heater output
Do not automatically install a 4kW heater because the larger number appears better.
Choose the heater around the vehicle, insulation and intended use.
Use a sensible overnight temperature
A slightly lower thermostat setting can substantially reduce the amount of heating required during cold weather.
Keep ducting efficient
Use suitable duct diameter, avoid unnecessary length and minimise sharp bends.
Position the outlet carefully
One well-positioned outlet can distribute heat more effectively than several badly designed branches.
Keep inlets and outlets clear
Blocked airflow can cause poor performance or overheating.
Maintain the electrical system
Good cable sizing and sound connections reduce voltage drop and unreliable startup.
Do not interrupt shutdown
Always switch the heater off using its controller and allow the cooling cycle to finish.

When High Consumption May Indicate a Problem
Book an inspection if the heater:
- Uses substantially more fuel than it previously did.
- Produces persistent white, grey or black smoke.
- Smells strongly of unburnt diesel.
- Starts and stops repeatedly.
- Struggles to warm the vehicle.
- Runs continuously at maximum output in mild weather.
- Causes the battery to fall unusually quickly.
- Works only while the engine is running.
- Displays frequent error codes.
- Has visible fuel leakage.
- Has weak warm-air output despite high fan noise.
High fuel consumption may involve poor combustion, while high electrical consumption may involve a struggling fan, wiring fault or repeated startup cycles.
