Why Won’t My Campervan or Motorhome Diesel Heater Start?

If your campervan or motorhome diesel heater will not start, the problem could be as simple as a low leisure battery or air in the fuel line. It could also be caused by poor wiring, a blocked intake or exhaust, a faulty fuel pump, carbon build-up or a heater lockout after repeated failed starts.

The quickest way to narrow down the fault is to pay attention to what the heater does when you switch it on.

Does the controller light up? Can you hear the fan? Does the fuel pump begin ticking? Is white smoke coming from the exhaust? Does the heater start and then shut down?

Each symptom points towards a different part of the system.

What Happens When a Diesel Heater Starts?

Understanding the normal startup sequence can help identify where the process is failing.

Although the exact sequence varies between brands and models, a diesel air heater will normally:

  1. Check its electrical supply and internal sensors.
  2. Begin running the combustion fan.
  3. Energise the glow plug or ignition element.
  4. Start operating the fuel-metering pump.
  5. Deliver small measured amounts of diesel to the burner.
  6. Ignite the fuel and establish a stable flame.
  7. Begin delivering warm air into the living area.
  8. Reduce its output as the requested temperature is approached.

If the heater detects that the required conditions have not been met, it may stop the startup process and display an error code.

Do not assume that a ticking pump means the heater is working correctly. It only confirms that the pump is being activated. Fuel may still not be reaching the heater, and combustion may still fail.

1. Low Leisure Battery Voltage

Low voltage is one of the most common reasons a campervan diesel heater will not start.

The heater requires electricity for its controller, fan, fuel pump and glow plug. Startup is particularly demanding because several components operate together before the heater establishes combustion.

A leisure battery may have enough power to illuminate the controller but still be unable to maintain the required voltage when the heater begins its startup sequence.

Possible signs include:

  • The controller switches on but the heater immediately stops.

  • Interior lights dim when the heater starts.
  • The heater works when connected to mains hook-up.

Why the Battery Monitor Can Be Misleading

A battery monitor may show a reasonable resting voltage before the heater starts.

The important measurement is the voltage reaching the heater while it is attempting to start.

A battery can recover slightly after a load is removed, which means the displayed voltage may look acceptable again after the heater has shut down.

The problem may be:

  • A discharged battery
  • An ageing battery
  • A battery with reduced usable capacity
  • Incorrect charger settings
  • Poor solar or alternator charging
  • An unsuitable battery for the expected demand
  • A fault elsewhere in the habitation electrical system

2. Excessive Voltage Drop in the Wiring

A fully charged battery does not guarantee that the heater is receiving the correct voltage.

Long cable runs, undersized wiring and poor connections can cause the voltage at the heater to fall significantly during startup.

Do not fit a larger fuse to try to solve the problem. A fuse protects the cable and should be selected around the wiring and manufacturer’s requirements.

3. A Blown Fuse or Poor Electrical Connection

If the heater controller is completely blank, begin with the electrical supply.

Safe initial checks can include:

  • Confirming that the habitation electrical system is switched on
  • Checking the relevant fuse
  • Looking for loose plug connections
  • Inspecting accessible cables for obvious damage
  • Checking whether other equipment on the same circuit is working
  • Confirming that an isolation switch has not been turned off

Replace a fuse only with the correct type and rating.

A fuse that blows repeatedly is a warning of an electrical fault. Continually replacing it without finding the cause could damage the wiring or heater.

Official Webasto guidance recommends checking fuses and plug connectors when an error occurs.

4. Air in the Diesel Heater Fuel Line

Air in the fuel line is another common reason a diesel heater clicks but does not start.

This frequently happens when:

  • A new heater has not yet been fully primed
  • The auxiliary tank has run empty
  • The vehicle fuel level has fallen below the heater pickup
  • The fuel line has been disconnected
  • A connection is allowing air into the system
  • The van has been left unused for a long period
  • The fuel line has drained back
  • Previous failed starts have left the line partly empty

You may see air gaps in a translucent fuel line, although the absence of a visible gap does not prove that fuel is reaching the burner correctly.

Repeatedly attempting to start the heater is not always the answer. Failed starts can introduce unburnt fuel into the combustion chamber and may eventually trigger a fault code or lockout.

Use the manufacturer’s approved priming procedure for your specific heater and controller. Do not run the fuel pump continuously unless the manufacturer’s instructions explicitly provide that function.

5. The Heater Has Run Out of Fuel

This sounds obvious, but the vehicle fuel gauge does not necessarily tell you whether the heater can access diesel.

A heater connected to the main vehicle tank normally uses a separate pickup. This may be intentionally positioned above the bottom of the tank so the heater cannot consume all the fuel needed to drive the vehicle.

The heater may therefore stop receiving fuel while the dashboard gauge still shows diesel remaining.

This is particularly worth checking if:

  • The heater stopped during the night.
  • The fuel level is low.
  • It works after refuelling.
  • It failed after the vehicle was parked on a slope.
  • The problem only occurs below a particular fuel level.

If the heater uses a separate tank, check that it genuinely contains enough fuel and that its pickup remains submerged.

After refilling, the fuel line may still need to be primed before the heater can start.

6. The Fuel Pump Is Not Ticking

Diesel-heater fuel pumps normally make a regular ticking sound during the fuel-delivery stage of startup.

If there is no ticking, possible causes include:

  • The heater has not progressed far enough through its startup sequence
  • Low supply voltage
  • A blown fuse
  • Disconnected pump wiring
  • Damaged wiring
  • A failed pump
  • A controller or control-unit fault
  • Heater lockout

Before assuming that the pump has failed, confirm whether the fan begins operating and whether the controller displays a fault.

The pump should also be installed in the orientation specified by its manufacturer. Poor positioning can affect fuel delivery and increase transmitted noise.

Do not connect the pump directly to a battery as a casual test. It is a metering pump designed to receive controlled electrical pulses.

7. The Pump Ticks but No Fuel Reaches the Heater

A ticking pump confirms movement inside the pump, but not successful fuel delivery.

Possible problems include:

  • An empty fuel tank
  • Air trapped in the pipe
  • A blocked fuel pickup
  • A loose connection drawing in air
  • Incorrect fuel-line diameter
  • Crushed or kinked pipework
  • A pump installed too far from the tank
  • Excessive height difference
  • Incorrect pump orientation
  • A damaged pump
  • Contaminated fuel
  • An unsuitable connection to the vehicle fuel system

Check accessible sections of fuel line for obvious damage, loose joints or large air gaps.

Fuel systems should not be altered casually. Leaks, unsuitable fittings and poor routing can create fire risks or allow the line to be damaged beneath the vehicle.

8. Blocked Combustion-Air Intake or Exhaust

A diesel heater needs a reliable supply of combustion air and an unrestricted route for exhaust gases.

The combustion-air intake is separate from the warm air circulated around the living area.

Problems can arise where the intake or exhaust has been:

  • Crushed
  • Kinked
  • Blocked by debris
  • Damaged by road contact
  • Restricted by corrosion
  • Filled with water
  • Installed with unsuitable bends
  • Positioned where mud or snow can obstruct it
  • Altered during other work beneath the vehicle

A restricted intake or exhaust can prevent ignition, cause flame failure or produce smoke. Webasto’s troubleshooting material specifically identifies blocked combustion-air and exhaust routing as a possible cause where a heater produces black smoke.

Do not run a heater with a damaged or disconnected exhaust.

Exhaust gases must be kept outside the vehicle and routed away from doors, windows, vents and other openings. A defective heater should not be operated, and fuel-burning heaters must not be run in enclosed spaces without appropriate exhaust extraction.

9. Restricted Warm Air Intake or Outlet

The air that the heater warms inside the campervan also needs to circulate freely.

A heater can overheat if:

  • Luggage is pushed against the cold-air intake
  • Bedding blocks the warm-air outlet
  • Furniture obstructs a vent
  • Ducting has collapsed
  • The duct contains very sharp bends
  • An outlet has been closed
  • The ducting arrangement is too restrictive
  • The heater has been installed inside an enclosure without adequate airflow

  • The heater starts normally and then shuts down.

Keep both the return-air intake and warm-air outlet clear.

Webasto’s operating instructions warn that restricted cold-air inlets or hot-air outlets can cause overheating and advise keeping them clear of objects and dirt.

10. White Smoke but No Heat

White smoke usually indicates that fuel is reaching the combustion chamber but is not burning correctly.

Possible causes include:

  • Air remaining in the fuel line
  • Low voltage affecting startup
  • A weak or failed glow plug
  • Excess fuel following repeated failed starts
  • Poor fuel delivery
  • Low ambient temperature combined with another fault
  • Carbon contamination
  • A blocked intake or exhaust
  • An internal burner problem

A brief puff during startup is different from dense smoke that continues while the heater repeatedly fails to ignite.

Stop attempting restarts if smoke becomes heavy, fuel can be smelt strongly or unburnt fuel begins dripping from the exhaust.

The heater may need to be inspected, cleaned or repaired before further use.

11. Black Smoke From the Exhaust

Black smoke normally points towards poor combustion.

Potential causes include:

  • Restricted combustion air
  • A blocked exhaust
  • Excessive fuel delivery
  • Carbon build-up
  • An unsuitable installation
  • An internal heater fault
  • Operation at an inappropriate setting for long periods

Do not ignore persistent black smoke.

Continued poor combustion can increase contamination inside the heater and may indicate that the intake or exhaust route needs urgent attention.

12. The Heater Starts and Then Stops

A heater that ignites but shuts down shortly afterwards may be losing one of the conditions needed to maintain combustion.

Possible causes include:

  • Battery voltage falling
  • Intermittent fuel delivery
  • Air entering the fuel line
  • Flame failure
  • A restricted exhaust or intake
  • Overheating
  • Restricted warm-air ducting
  • A faulty temperature sensor
  • Controller or wiring faults
  • Internal carbon build-up

Listen carefully to the sequence.

If the pump stops first, the control unit may already have detected a fault. If the fan continues after the heat stops, the heater may be carrying out its shutdown cycle.

Do not interrupt that cycle by switching off the main battery isolator.

Diesel heaters continue running their fan after being switched off so heat can be removed safely. Webasto warns that cutting power without allowing the after-run to complete can cause overheating.

13. The Heater Blows Cold Air

A diesel heater does not normally produce hot air immediately after being switched on.

It first needs to complete its checks, begin fuel delivery and establish combustion.

Cold air becomes a fault when:

  • The heater never begins producing heat.
  • The pump ticks but ignition does not occur.
  • A fault code appears.
  • White smoke is produced.
  • The system continues operating only as a fan.
  • The controller has accidentally been set to ventilation mode.
  • Combustion starts and then fails.

Check the selected operating mode before assuming that the heater is defective.

Controllers vary considerably. Refer to the instructions for the exact heater and control panel fitted.

14. Repeated Failed Starts and Heater Lockout

Many diesel heaters record faults when they cannot ignite or maintain combustion.

After repeated unsuccessful attempts, some models may enter a lockout condition to prevent continued operation without the underlying problem being addressed.

The controller may display:

  • A numbered error code
  • A letter and number
  • A series of flashing lights
  • A generic fault symbol
  • A service message

Do not reset the heater repeatedly without understanding the cause.

A reset may clear the displayed fault, but it will not repair:

  • A weak battery

15. Carbon Build Up Inside the Heater

Carbon build-up is frequently blamed for every diesel-heater fault, but it should not be assumed without diagnosis.

Deposits can develop where combustion has repeatedly been poor or where the heater has experienced:

  • Unsuccessful starts
  • Low voltage
  • Poor fuel delivery
  • Restricted combustion air
  • An unsuitable exhaust
  • Long-term operating problems
  • Repeated short periods of use without reaching normal operating conditions

Possible signs include:

  • Increasing smoke

Cleaning the combustion chamber is not a suitable first DIY step.

If the external systems are working correctly, the fault may be inside the heater.
