2kW vs 4kW Diesel Heater: Which Size Does Your Campervan Need?

General starting point: A 2kW heater is normally appropriate for VW Transporter T5, T6 & T7, Transit Custom and similar-sized insulated vans. A 4kW heater may be better for large panel vans, coachbuilt motorhomes, multiple outlets or regular cold-climate use. The final choice depends on insulation, layout and ducting.

Choosing the correct diesel heater output is an important part of planning a campervan heating system.

A heater that is too small may struggle to warm the vehicle during cold weather. However, simply fitting the largest heater available is not always the best answer either.

A larger heater may warm the van quickly, but it can be poorly suited to a compact, well insulated conversion if it spends most of its operating time at its lowest output.

For most campervan installations, the choice is between a heater rated at approximately 2kW and one rated at approximately 4kW.

The right choice depends on much more than the length of the van. Insulation, glazing, layout, outside temperature, ducting and how the vehicle will be used all make a difference.

What does 2kW or 4kW mean?

The figure describes the heater’s approximate maximum heating output.

A 4kW diesel heater can produce roughly twice the maximum heat output of a 2kW model. However, most modern branded heaters do not run continuously at maximum output. They regulate their heat output according to the selected operating mode and controller.

For example, the AUTOTERM Air 2D operates over an output range of approximately 0.8–2kW. Current Eberspächer specifications show its Airtronic S2 D2L operating between approximately 0.9 and 2.2kW, while its larger D4L model reaches approximately 4kW.

The practical question is therefore not simply:

How much heat can the heater produce?

It is also:

How well can the heater regulate its output once the van is warm?

Is a bigger diesel heater always better?

No.

An oversized heater can warm a small vehicle very quickly, but it may then spend long periods operating at its lowest setting or repeatedly reducing and increasing its output.

Depending on the heater, controller and installation, consistently operating at very low output can contribute to inefficient combustion and carbon accumulation.

An undersized heater creates the opposite problem. It may run continuously at maximum output without bringing the whole vehicle up to a comfortable temperature.

A properly selected heater should be able to:

  • Warm the vehicle within a reasonable period
  • Maintain a comfortable temperature
  • Operate across a useful part of its output range
  • Supply the planned ducting arrangement
  • Cope with the lowest temperatures in which the van will realistically be used

The goal is not to install the most powerful heater. It is to choose the heater that best matches the vehicle and intended use.

When is a 2kW diesel heater normally suitable?

A 2kW diesel heater is commonly suitable for compact and medium-sized campervans.

Potential examples include:

  • Volkswagen Transporter T5, T6, T7
  • Ford Transit Custom
  • Renault Trafic
  • Vauxhall Vivaro
  • Nissan Primastar
  • Mercedes-Benz Vito
  • Volkswagen Caddy
  • Ford Transit Connect
  • Small day vans
  • Compact pop-top campervans
  • Well-insulated medium-wheelbase conversions

A 2kW heater may also be suitable for some larger panel vans, including Relay, Boxer, Ducato, Sprinter and Crafter conversions, where the vehicle is well insulated and the warm-air outlet is sensibly positioned.

Advantages of a 2kW heater

A correctly selected 2kW heater can offer:

  • Better output control in a smaller space
  • Lower maximum fuel consumption
  • Lower maximum electrical demand
  • More compact ducting
  • Easier installation in restricted spaces
  • Less risk of overheating a small living area
  • Quieter operation when a larger heater would be excessive

A well-insulated campervan retains heat more effectively than an unlined commercial van. Once the interior has warmed up, relatively little heat may be needed to maintain the chosen temperature.

This is why van size alone cannot determine the correct heater.

When is a 4kW diesel heater normally suitable?

A 4kW diesel heater may be more appropriate for:

  • Large panel-van conversions
  • Extra-long-wheelbase vans
  • High-roof vehicles
  • Coachbuilt motorhomes
  • Vehicles with large glazed areas
  • Poorly insulated or older conversions
  • Vans used regularly during very cold weather
  • Installations with longer ducting
  • Systems supplying several warm-air outlets
  • Layouts with separated sleeping or washroom areas
  • Commercial or specialist vehicles with greater heat loss

Typical base vehicles could include:

  • Citroën Relay
  • Peugeot Boxer
  • Fiat Ducato
  • Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
  • Volkswagen Crafter
  • MAN TGE
  • Ford Transit
  • Renault Master
  • Vauxhall Movano

However, owning one of these vehicles does not automatically mean a 4kW heater is required.

A well-insulated L3H2 panel van with one open living space may be comfortable with a suitable 2kW heater. A shorter vehicle with poor insulation, extensive glazing and several separated areas may need more output.

These are general comparisons rather than rules. Heater models differ in their minimum output, airflow, controller behaviour and permitted ducting arrangements.

The most important sizing factors

Vehicle size and internal volume

A long wheelbase, high roof panel van contains considerably more air than a compact VW Transporter style campervan.

More air volume usually requires more heating capacity, but the physical dimensions are only the starting point.

Furniture, raised beds, bathrooms and storage compartments can divide the interior into several areas. The heater may need to move warm air around these obstacles rather than simply heating one open space.

Insulation quality

Insulation has a major effect on heater performance.

A conversion with properly installed insulation, insulated window covers and controlled ventilation will generally retain heat better than a vehicle with:

  • Uninsulated metalwork
  • Exposed door panels
  • Poorly fitted insulation
  • Large uncovered windows
  • Significant draughts
  • Uninsulated cab glass
  • Open ventilation routes

A larger heater cannot fully compensate for badly planned insulation. It may warm the air, but the heat will escape quickly through the vehicle body and glazing.

Windows and pop-top roofs

Glass loses heat more quickly than an insulated wall.

Large side windows, rear-door glazing, rooflights and an exposed cab can substantially increase heat loss.

A fabric sided pop-top also behaves differently from a solid insulated roof. A compact pop-top campervan may therefore lose more heat than its internal volume initially suggests, particularly when the roof is raised in winter.

Thermal screens or an insulated pop-top wrap can make a noticeable difference.

Intended travel season

A van used for occasional spring and summer trips has different requirements from one used for:

  • Winter touring
  • Ski trips
  • Extended European travel
  • Full-time living
  • Overnight work accommodation
  • Mountainous or exposed locations

The heater should be selected for realistic use rather than an extreme scenario that is unlikely to occur.

Fitting a 4kW heater to a small van solely because it might experience one unusually cold night could make the system less suitable during the remainder of the year.

Warm-air ducting

The heater does not just need to produce heat. It must move that heat into the living area effectively.

Ducting performance can be affected by:

  • Pipe diameter
  • Overall duct length
  • Tight bends
  • Crushed or restricted ducting
  • Branches and Y-pieces
  • Outlet size
  • Closing vents
  • Furniture obstructions
  • Poor return-air circulation

A long, heavily branched ducting system may require greater airflow than a short single-outlet installation.

However, a larger heater is not a substitute for poor ducting design. Unnecessary bends and restrictions can cause weak output or overheating problems regardless of the heater’s stated power.

Number of outlets

A compact van may only need one correctly positioned warm-air outlet.

Larger campervans may benefit from separate outlets serving:

  • The main living area
  • Rear sleeping area
  • Washroom
  • Garage
  • Drying cupboard

Adding more outlets is not always beneficial. Every branch introduces additional resistance and divides the available airflow.

The heater manufacturer’s ducting guidance must be followed, including restrictions on duct sizes, total lengths, bends and closable outlets.

Heating speed

A 4kW heater can generally raise the temperature of a cold, large vehicle more quickly than a 2kW unit.

That can be useful where the van is frequently allowed to become completely cold before heating is switched on.

However, fast initial warm-up is only one part of the decision. Once the vehicle reaches the required temperature, the heater must still be capable of maintaining it comfortably without producing excessive heat.

Can a 2kW diesel heater warm an L3H2 van?

In many cases, yes.

A suitable 2kW heater can successfully heat an insulated L3H2 campervan, particularly where:

  • The layout is relatively open
  • The vehicle is properly insulated
  • Cab thermal screens are used
  • The ducting is short and unrestricted
  • The heater outlet is centrally positioned
  • The van is primarily used in typical UK conditions
  • The occupants do not require several independently heated areas

A 4kW heater may be more appropriate where the same vehicle has:

  • Poor insulation
  • Extensive glazing
  • Several separate rooms
  • Long or branched ducting
  • Regular cold-climate use
  • A large garage or washroom requiring heat
  • A requirement for faster warm-up

The vehicle should be assessed as a complete conversion rather than sized from the model name alone.

Is a 4kW heater too powerful for a VW Transporter?

It may be.

Many Transporter T5, T6 & T7 conversions are adequately heated by a suitable 2kW heater. A 4kW unit can deliver more heat than a compact conversion needs once it has warmed up.

There may still be particular installations where a larger heater is justified, but it should not be selected simply because it has a higher number.

Factors such as a raised pop-top, winter use, unusual ducting or poor insulation would need to be considered.

For most standard Transporter-style campervans, a compact 2kW-class heater is normally the starting point for assessment.

Can a 4kW heater simply be turned down?

Most branded 4kW heaters can reduce their output, but they still have a minimum operating level.

That minimum output may remain relatively high for a small, insulated vehicle. The heater’s controller may also regulate temperature differently depending on the selected mode and where the temperature sensor is located.

It is therefore not safe to assume that a 4kW heater will behave exactly like a 2kW heater simply because both can be turned down.

The full operating range should be considered—not only maximum output.

Does a larger heater use more diesel?

At maximum output, a 4kW heater will normally consume more fuel than a 2kW heater.

Real world fuel use depends on:

  • Heater model
  • Selected temperature
  • Outside temperature
  • Insulation
  • Operating mode
  • Time spent at high output
  • Frequency of startup and shutdown
  • Condition of the heater
  • Vehicle heat loss

A larger heater may spend less time at maximum power, but that does not automatically make it more economical.

Correct sizing and good insulation are generally more important than choosing a heater based solely on headline fuel-consumption figures.

Does a larger heater use more electricity?

Diesel air heaters require electricity for:

  • Initial startup
  • Glow plug operation
  • Fuel pump
  • Combustion fan
  • Warm air fan
  • Controller
  • Controlled shutdown

A larger heater will usually have a greater maximum electrical demand, although actual consumption varies between manufacturers and operating modes.

The electrical system must be capable of supporting the heater during startup. Low voltage at the heater can lead to unsuccessful starts, lockouts and smoking.

Correct cable sizing, fusing, battery condition and connection quality are therefore part of the heater installation.

What happens when a heater is too small?

Possible signs include:

  • The heater runs continuously at maximum output
  • The rear of the vehicle remains cold
  • The van takes an excessive time to warm up
  • Temperature falls significantly overnight
  • Washroom or sleeping areas receive little heat
  • The heater performs acceptably in autumn but struggles in winter

Before blaming the heater output, the installation should also be checked for:

  • Restricted ducting
  • Poor outlet positioning
  • Blocked return air
  • Low fuel delivery
  • Low electrical voltage
  • Dirty internal components
  • Inadequate insulation
  • Excessive draughts

A poorly installed 4kW heater can perform worse than a correctly installed 2kW system.

What happens when a heater is too large?

Possible problems include:

  • The living area becoming uncomfortably hot
  • Very short heating periods
  • Frequent changes in output
  • The heater spending most of its time at minimum power
  • Difficulty maintaining a moderate temperature
  • Excessive heat near the outlet
  • Greater equipment and installation cost than necessary

Persistent low output operation may also be undesirable for combustion quality in some diesel heaters.

The heater should periodically be allowed to reach normal operating temperature and complete its correct shutdown cycle. The electrical supply should not be disconnected while the heater is running or cooling down.

Which heater size should you choose?

As a broad starting point:

Consider a 2kW heater for:

  • Compact campervans
  • VW Transporter-sized vans
  • Transit Custom-sized vans
  • Well-insulated medium vans
  • Simple one-outlet systems
  • Open-plan conversions
  • Typical UK touring

Consider a 4kW heater for:

  • Large panel vans
  • Coachbuilt motorhomes
  • High-roof or extra-long vehicles
  • Poorly insulated conversions
  • Several heated zones
  • Multiple suitable outlets
  • Long ducting arrangements
  • Regular winter or cold climate use

These are starting points rather than guaranteed recommendations.

The final choice should take account of the particular vehicle, construction and heater model.
