Why Is My Campervan or Motorhome Diesel Heater Smoking?

A small amount of smoke during the first startup of a newly installed diesel heater can sometimes be normal. Persistent white or black smoke, heavy fumes, repeated failed ignition or diesel dripping from the exhaust is not.

The colour of the smoke can provide a useful clue:

  • White smoke commonly means diesel is entering the heater but is not igniting or burning completely.

What Causes White Smoke From a Diesel Heater?

White smoke is one of the most common complaints involving campervan diesel heaters.

It usually indicates that diesel is being delivered but is not being burned cleanly. The smoke is often made up of atomised or partly burned fuel passing through the heater and leaving through the exhaust.

1. Low Leisure Battery Voltage

A diesel heater relies on electricity during startup.

The glow plug, combustion fan, controller and fuel pump must all operate correctly before a stable flame can be established. If the voltage drops too far, the heater may deliver fuel without achieving reliable ignition.

This can cause:

  • White smoke from the exhaust
  • Several unsuccessful ignition attempts
  • The fan running without heat
  • An undervoltage error code
  • A heater that starts only while the engine is running
