Why Is Air Coming From My Campervan or Motorhome Taps?

Air coming from campervan or motorhome taps is often normal immediately after refilling a drained water system. However, if the taps continue spluttering, the pump repeatedly loses pressure or air returns after every journey, there may be a fault on the pump’s inlet side.

Common causes include:

  • A low fresh-water level
  • The tank outlet becoming uncovered
  • Air introduced after the tank ran empty
  • A loose pump-filter seal
  • A split or poorly connected suction pipe
  • A blocked inlet filter
  • The pump losing its prime
  • A water heater that has not completely filled
  • An open drain or frost-protection valve
  • A faulty non-return valve

Is Some Air From the Taps Normal?

Yes.

Air is expected after:

  • Refilling an empty tank
  • Draining the system for winter
  • Replacing a pump or filter
  • Disconnecting pipework
  • Cleaning the fresh-water tank
  • Filling an empty water heater
  • Running the tank completely dry

The pump must push this trapped air through the taps before water flow becomes steady.

A properly functioning system should normally settle once:

  1. The fresh-water tank contains enough water.
  2. Every drain valve is closed.
  3. Cold outlets have been bled.
  4. The water heater has filled.
  5. Hot outlets have been bled.
  6. The pump has reached its shut-off pressure.

Persistent air is different. If the system has already been bled but begins spluttering again, air is probably entering somewhere or water is draining away from the pump.

What Causes Campervan Taps to Splutter?

The water pump should draw a continuous supply of water from the tank and pressurise the pipework.

Spluttering occurs when the pump delivers a mixture of water and air.

That air may already be trapped within the system, or it may be entering continuously through:

  • The fresh-water tank outlet
  • A pipe joint
  • Pump filter
  • Suction hose
  • Drain valve
  • Water heater
  • Pump itself

The pump’s inlet side is particularly important. It operates under suction, so a loose fitting may pull air inward without producing an obvious water leak.

This means a system can have a significant air-entry problem even though every visible pipe appears dry.

1. The Water System Has Recently Been Refilled

After winterisation or maintenance, a large amount of air can remain within:

  • Cold-water pipework
  • Hot-water pipework
  • Pump
  • Accumulator
  • Water heater
  • Shower hose
  • External shower
  • Toilet supply
  • Unused pipe branches

Bleed each outlet individually.

Start with the cold side because this fills the basic pump and pipe system without first needing to fill the water heater.

Once the cold flow is steady:

  1. Open a hot tap.
  2. Allow the water heater to fill.
  3. Wait while air escapes.
  4. Continue until the flow is steady.
  5. Repeat at the remaining hot outlets.

Do not switch on an electric water-heating element until the heater has been completely filled.

2. The Fresh-Water Tank Is Low

A tank can still contain water while its outlet begins drawing air.

This is more likely where:

  • The vehicle is parked on a slope
  • The outlet is mounted on the side of the tank
  • The tank has an uneven base
  • Water moves away from the outlet while driving
  • The pump intake does not reach the lowest point
  • The tank gauge is inaccurate

Possible signs include:

  • Taps work when the tank is full
  • Spluttering begins below a certain level
  • Air appears after cornering or braking
  • Pump becomes louder
  • Water flow returns when the vehicle is parked differently

Add a meaningful amount of fresh water and park the vehicle level before investigating more complicated faults.

Do not rely entirely on the control-panel tank reading.

3. Air Entered After the Tank Ran Empty

Once the pump draws the tank completely dry, air enters the inlet pipe and pump chamber.

Refilling the tank does not always restore water immediately.

The pump may need to draw water through:

  • A long inlet pipe
  • A high loop
  • A filter
  • Several fittings
  • A non-return valve

A pump that repeatedly fails to prime may have an air leak, restriction or internal fault rather than a simple temporary airlock.

4. Water Moves Away From the Tank Outlet While Driving

Driving with a low water level can allow the tank outlet to become exposed.

This may happen during:

  • Braking
  • Acceleration
  • Cornering
  • Climbing hills
  • Descending hills
  • Driving over uneven roads

The pump may then draw a pocket of air into the pipework.

When the taps are opened later, they may:

  • Splutter
  • Produce uneven flow
  • Stop briefly
  • Release air before water returns

Switching the water pump off while travelling can prevent it repeatedly trying to pressurise a system that has drawn air.

However, if the system regularly loses prime with a reasonable water level, the tank outlet, pump position and suction pipework should be inspected.

5. The Pump Filter Is Not Sealed Correctly

Many campervan pressure pumps have a small strainer or filter fitted immediately before the pump.

The filter often contains:

  • A removable transparent bowl
  • Fine mesh screen
  • Rubber O-ring
  • Threaded or clip connection

If the seal is:

  • Misaligned
  • Damaged
  • Dirty
  • Missing
  • Overtightened
  • Not seated correctly

the pump may draw air through the filter body.

Because the filter is on the suction side, there may be no visible water leak.

Possible signs include:

  • Bubbles visible inside the filter
  • Air repeatedly entering the taps
  • Pump working when the filter is pressed or moved

Switch the pump off before opening the filter.

Clean and inspect the O-ring, then refit the housing evenly. Do not overtighten a plastic filter bowl.

6. The Filter Is Blocked

A restricted filter can reduce the amount of water reaching the pump.

Debris may include:

  • Tank-manufacturing swarf
  • Sediment
  • Limescale
  • Biofilm
  • Pipe fragments
  • Sealant
  • Dirt introduced during filling

The pump may then struggle to draw water and create an aerated or inconsistent flow.

Symptoms can include:

  • Pump becoming unusually noisy
  • Weak water pressure
  • Spluttering under higher demand
  • Pump priming only with a full tank
  • Flow improving after the filter is cleaned

Check the filter before replacing the pump.

If the filter quickly becomes blocked again, the fresh-water tank may need cleaning and the source of the debris should be investigated.

7. A Loose Inlet Fitting Is Drawing Air

Any connection between the tank and pump can admit air.

Common points include:

  • Tank outlet
  • Tank isolation valve
  • Flexible hose connection
  • Push-fit joint
  • Filter connection
  • Pump inlet
  • Non-return valve
  • Threaded adapter

A suction-side fitting does not need to leak water visibly to cause a fault.

Look for:

  • Air bubbles in transparent pipe
  • Movement at connectors
  • Damaged O-rings
  • Pipe not inserted fully
  • Loose hose clamps
  • Cracked plastic fittings
  • Connections disturbed during other work

Do not apply random sealants to potable-water fittings.

The connection should be dismantled, inspected and remade using components suitable for drinking-water systems and the fitting manufacturer’s instructions.

8. The Suction Pipe Is Split or Damaged

A small crack in the pipe between the tank and pump can allow air to enter whenever the pump runs.

The damage may be caused by:

  • Freezing
  • Age
  • Abrasion
  • Vibration
  • Poor pipe support
  • Sharp metal edges
  • Furniture installation
  • Overtightened hose clamps
  • Unsuitable hose
  • Repeated movement

The split may close when the pump is off, making it difficult to see.

Inspect the inlet pipe while the pump is running, particularly around:

  • Tight bends
  • Tank connections
  • Pump fittings
  • Clips and brackets
  • Holes through metalwork
  • Areas beneath the vehicle

A pipe can also collapse under suction if it is too soft or has been routed around an excessively tight bend.

9. The Tank Outlet Is Loose or Damaged

The connection where water leaves the fresh-water tank can become:

  • Loose
  • Cracked
  • Poorly sealed
  • Partially blocked
  • Damaged by road debris
  • Disturbed during tank maintenance

An underslung tank is particularly exposed to:

  • Road spray
  • Salt
  • Impact
  • Temperature changes
  • Pipe movement

A loose tank fitting may draw air without producing a substantial water leak until the tank is very full.

Check for:

  • Dampness
  • Movement
  • Cracks
  • Staining
  • Damaged threads
  • Pipe strain
  • Incorrectly supported hose

Do not overtighten a plastic tank fitting. This can distort the seal or crack the tank wall.

10. The Pump Is Losing Its Prime

A pump that works initially but later delivers air may be allowing water to drain back towards the tank.

Possible causes include:

  • Suction-side air leak
  • Faulty pump valves
  • Failed non-return valve
  • Loose filter housing
  • Poor tank connection
  • Pump mounted too high
  • Air-trapping pipe route

A healthy sealed system should not normally need to be manually primed every time the vehicle is used.

Signs of lost prime include:

  • Long delay before water reaches the taps
  • Pump running rapidly after the vehicle has been parked
  • Flow beginning normally and then spluttering
  • Pump working better with a full tank
  • Water draining backwards when the pump stops

The pump inlet, internal valves and non-return arrangement should be assessed together.

11. The Pump Is Mounted Too High Above the Tank

Self-priming pumps have limits on how far they can lift water.

A pump may struggle where:

  • It is mounted significantly above the tank
  • The inlet hose is long
  • The pipe contains high loops
  • Several restrictive fittings are fitted
  • The filter is partly blocked
  • A small air leak is present

The fault may become more noticeable as the water level drops because the pump must create greater suction.

A system that only works with a completely full tank may need its pump position or inlet layout reconsidered.

12. The Inlet Pipe Contains a High Loop

Air naturally collects at high points.

A suction pipe that rises and falls before reaching the pump may retain a pocket of air and make priming unreliable.

Common causes include:

  • Excess pipe left coiled
  • Pipe routed over furniture
  • Pump moved during an upgrade
  • Pipe unsupported
  • Tank installed lower than originally planned

The inlet route should generally be:

  • Short
  • Smooth
  • Properly supported
  • Free from unnecessary high points
  • Protected from crushing and abrasion

Do not alter the pipe route without maintaining safe access to the pump, filter and isolation valve.

13. The Fresh-Water Tank Is Not Venting Properly

As the pump removes water, air must enter the tank to replace it.

If the tank vent is:

  • Blocked
  • Kinked
  • Trapped
  • Closed by a valve
  • Filled with water
  • Poorly installed

the tank may develop a partial vacuum.

This can cause:

  • Weak flow
  • Pump noise
  • Tank deformation
  • Intermittent supply
  • Water flow improving when the filler cap is opened

A vent fault does not always create obvious air bubbles at the taps, but it can cause unstable pump operation and should be checked where the system struggles as water is used.

The vent should remain protected from contamination and road spray.

14. A Non-Return Valve Is Faulty

A non-return valve allows water to move in one direction while preventing it from flowing backwards.

If it is:

  • Stuck
  • Leaking
  • Installed backwards
  • Blocked
  • Damaged by freezing
  • Contaminated by debris

the pump may lose pressure or allow water to drain back.

Possible signs include:

  • Air after the vehicle has been parked

Do not remove a non-return valve without understanding its purpose. It may be needed to protect the pump, heater or filling arrangement.

15. The Water Heater Is Still Filling

If the cold taps work normally but the hot taps splutter, the water heater may simply be filling.

A campervan or motorhome water heater can hold several litres.

When the system has been drained, the pump must fill the complete heater before a steady hot-side flow reaches the taps.

During filling, expect:

  • Air from the hot tap
  • Uneven flow
  • Pump running continuously
  • Water and air alternating
  • Several minutes before steady flow, depending on system capacity

Keep one hot tap open while filling, following the heater manufacturer’s instructions.

Do not switch on an electric element or burner until the heater is correctly filled.

16. The Water-Heater Drain Valve Is Open

Many heaters have a drain or frost-protection valve.

If it remains open:

  • Water may discharge beneath the vehicle
  • The heater may never fill
  • Hot taps may continue blowing air
  • Pump may run continuously
  • Pressure may not build

Check for water leaving the vehicle near the heater.

Some automatic frost-protection valves will not remain closed below a particular temperature until the valve and surrounding area have warmed.

Do not force the valve closed or disable its safety function.

17. The Hot-Water System Has an Airlock

Hot-water pipework may include:

  • Water heater
  • Mixer valve
  • Non-return valve
  • Long pipe runs
  • High loops
  • Shower hose
  • Multiple outlets

Air can remain trapped even after the cold system appears normal.

To bleed the hot side:

  1. Confirm the heater drain valve is closed.
  2. Ensure the heater is switched off.
  3. Open one hot tap fully.
  4. Run the pump.
  5. Allow air to escape until flow becomes steady.
  6. Repeat at each hot outlet.
  7. Check the heater and pipe fittings for leaks.

If one hot outlet continues spluttering while the others work normally, investigate that branch rather than repeatedly bleeding the entire system.

18. The Shower Hose Contains Trapped Air

A shower hose can hold a considerable amount of air after draining.

Because it often rises above the tap or mixer, air may remain trapped within the loop.

Remove the shower head from its holder and allow the hose to hang lower while bleeding it.

Check that:

  • The shower mixer is fully open
  • The hose is not kinked
  • The shower head is not blocked
  • The trigger or shut-off valve is open

A restricted shower head can make normal water flow appear aerated or uneven.

19. One Tap Aerator Is Blocked

If only one tap splutters, the problem may be local to that outlet.

The small aerator at the end of the spout can collect:

  • Limescale
  • Pipe debris
  • Tank residue
  • Seal fragments
  • Sediment

A partially blocked aerator can produce an irregular or spray-like flow that resembles air in the wider system.

Remove and clean the aerator where the tap manufacturer permits.

If the other taps operate normally, avoid replacing the pump before checking the affected outlet.

20. A Tap Microswitch or Mixer Is Faulty

Some campervan water systems use taps with built-in electrical microswitches rather than a pressure-controlled pump.

A faulty switch or tap can cause:

  • Pump operating intermittently
  • Uneven water flow
  • Delayed pump response
  • Pump stopping before air is fully cleared
  • Pump continuing after the tap closes

In a pressure-pump system, a damaged mixer cartridge can also restrict one side of the supply.

Identify whether the system uses:

  • Pressure-controlled pump
  • Microswitch taps
  • Submersible pump
  • Combination of controls

The diagnosis differs between them.

21. A Submersible Pump Is Drawing Air

Some motorhomes and campervans use a submersible pump inside the fresh-water tank.

It may draw air where:

  • Water level is too low
  • Pump has moved from its mounting
  • Pickup is not submerged
  • Pump body is damaged
  • Outlet hose is loose
  • Tank contains internal debris

Unlike an external diaphragm pump, a submersible pump relies on remaining under water.

22. The Pump Is Cavitating

Cavitation can occur when the pump cannot receive water freely enough.

Possible causes include:

  • Blocked filter
  • Restricted tank outlet
  • Collapsing inlet hose
  • Excessive suction height
  • Tight bends
  • Partially closed valve

The pump may sound rough, rattly or unusually loud.

The resulting flow can appear unstable or aerated.

Continued operation under restricted inlet conditions can damage the pump.

Check the water supply to the pump rather than assuming the motor itself has failed.

23. Low Voltage Is Affecting Pump Performance

A pump receiving inadequate voltage may run too slowly to draw and pressurise water correctly.

Possible causes include:

  • Discharged leisure battery
  • Loose electrical connection
  • Corroded fuse holder
  • Poor negative connection
  • Undersized wiring
  • Damaged switch
  • Excessive cable length

Signs include:

  • Pump sound changing as lights are switched on
  • Better performance on hook-up
  • Better performance with the engine running
  • Lights dimming when the pump operates
  • Pump becoming warm
  • Weak or aerated flow

Voltage should be checked at the pump while it is running.

24. The Pump Is Internally Worn

Inside a diaphragm pump are small valves and flexible components that create suction and pressure.

Wear or damage can result from:

  • Extended dry running
  • Freezing
  • Debris
  • Age
  • Unsuitable chemicals
  • Excessive operating pressure
  • Contaminated water

A worn pump may:

  • Fail to prime
  • Deliver water mixed with air
  • Produce weak pressure
  • Run continuously
  • Lose prime after stopping
  • Become unusually noisy

Some pumps can be serviced using a diaphragm or valve kit. Others are more economical to replace.

Testing the inlet supply first avoids replacing a pump when the actual fault is a loose filter or blocked pipe.

25. The Accumulator Is Unlikely to Introduce Air Into the Water

An accumulator contains a pressurised air chamber separated from the water by a diaphragm or bladder.

Under normal operation, that air should not enter the water system.

An incorrectly charged or failed accumulator is more likely to cause:

  • Rapid pump cycling
  • Pulsating flow
  • Poor pressure stability
  • Reduced stored pressure

It does not usually cause air bubbles at the taps.

If air appears immediately after the accumulator has been removed or serviced, inspect the connections and confirm that the system has been fully bled.

Why Does the Pump Keep Running While the Taps Splutter?

A pressure-controlled pump switches off only when the system reaches its set pressure.

If it is drawing air, it may be unable to build that pressure.

Possible causes include:

  • Empty or low tank

  • Water heater still filling
  • Loose filter housing
  • Damaged inlet pipe

How to Bleed Air From a Campervan Water System

The exact process varies by installation, but this is a sensible general procedure.

Step 1: Fill the fresh-water tank

Add enough water to keep the outlet submerged.

Step 2: Park level

This reduces the chance of the outlet drawing air.

Step 3: Check all drains

Confirm that the following are closed:

  • Tank drain
  • Pipe drain points
  • Water-heater drain
  • Frost-protection valve

Step 4: Check normal valve positions

Confirm the tank outlet, pump, heater and winterisation valves are set for normal use.

Step 5: Inspect the pump filter

Check that the filter is clean and its seal is correctly seated.

Step 6: Open one cold tap

Open it fully.

Step 7: Run the pump briefly

Allow trapped air to escape until the flow becomes steady.

Stop if the pump continues running without drawing water.

Step 8: Bleed every cold outlet

Include:

  • Kitchen tap
  • Bathroom tap
  • Shower
  • External shower
  • Toilet supply where relevant

Step 9: Fill the water heater

Keep one hot tap open while the heater fills.

Step 10: Bleed every hot outlet

Continue until the flow is steady and free from large air pockets.

Step 11: Close every tap

The pump should build pressure and switch off.

If air returns, the system has not simply needed bleeding. It is likely drawing air or losing its prime.

How Long Should Taps Splutter After Refilling?

A recently drained system may splutter for a short time while each pipe and appliance fills.

The exact time depends on:

  • Pipe length
  • Number of outlets
  • Water-heater capacity
  • Pump flow rate
  • Whether the pump has retained its prime
  • System layout

The flow should become progressively steadier.

Persistent spluttering that continues after every outlet has been bled is not normal and warrants investigation.

Why Does Air Return the Following Morning?

Air returning after the vehicle has been parked suggests that water may be draining backwards or air is entering while the system rests.

Possible causes include:

  • Loose pump-filter seal
  • Faulty non-return valve
  • Split suction pipe
  • Loose tank connection
  • Worn internal pump valves
  • Pump positioned too high

A sealed pressure system should not normally need complete bleeding every day.

Why Is There Air Only in the Hot Taps?

Where cold water is steady but hot water splutters, concentrate on:

Do not dismantle gas or electrically heated equipment unless you are competent and authorised to work on it.

Why Is There Air Only at One Tap?

If every other outlet works normally, check the local branch.

  • Blocked aerator
  • Kinked pipe
  • Tap cartridge fault
  • Microswitch fault
  • Partially closed isolation valve

  • Debris within the fitting
  • Air trapped in a high hose loop

A single affected outlet rarely points towards a complete pump failure.

Can Air Damage a Campervan Water Pump?

Briefly moving air during normal priming is expected for many diaphragm pumps.

However, extended dry running or a persistent inlet restriction can contribute to:

  • Pump overheating
  • Valve wear
  • Diaphragm damage
  • Reduced performance
  • Premature failure

Follow the exact pump manufacturer’s dry-running guidance.

If no water appears after a short priming attempt, stop and find the cause.

  • Tank and heater drain valves

Why are my campervan taps spluttering?

The system may contain trapped air following refilling, or the pump may be drawing air through a low tank level, loose filter, damaged pipe or inlet fitting.

Is air in campervan taps normal after filling the tank?

A small amount is normal after the system has been drained.

It should clear once every cold and hot outlet has been properly bled.

Why does the air keep coming back?

Persistent air normally means the pump is losing its prime or drawing air through the tank outlet, filter, pipework or a loose connection.

Can a pump draw air without leaking water?

Yes.

The inlet side operates under suction, so a joint can pull air inward without allowing visible water to escape.

Why do my taps splutter after driving?

Water may have moved away from the tank outlet, especially where the water level is low.

A loose suction connection may also be disturbed by vehicle movement.

Why do only the hot taps contain air?

The water heater may still be filling, its drain valve may be open or air may be trapped within the hot-water pipework.

Why does only one tap splutter?

The fault may be local to that tap, aerator, mixer, hose or pipe branch rather than the main water pump.

Can a blocked filter cause air at the taps?

A restricted inlet filter can prevent the pump receiving a steady supply of water and cause unstable or aerated flow.

Can an accumulator cause air in the water?

Not normally.

Its air chamber should be separated from the water by a bladder or diaphragm. An accumulator fault is more likely to cause pump cycling or pulsation.

Should I leave the pump running until the air clears?

Only for a short normal bleeding period.

If no steady flow develops, switch the pump off and investigate rather than allowing it to run dry.

Can low voltage cause spluttering water?

It can reduce pump speed and pressure, particularly where wiring, battery condition or connections are poor.
