If the 12V electrics in your campervan or motorhome have stopped working, the fault may be as simple as a switched-off battery isolator or blown fuse. The first clue is whether everything has stopped working or only one circuit is affected.

1. Check the Main 12V Switch and Battery Isolator
Many campervans and motorhomes have more than one way of switching off the habitation electrics.
These may include:
- A master switch on the control panel
- A physical battery isolator
- A removable isolation key
- An individual switch for lighting or pumps
- A remote battery switch
- A low-voltage disconnect
- A battery-management-system control
It is easy for an isolator to be switched accidentally while loading the vehicle, carrying out maintenance or moving stored items.
Before assuming there is a major fault:
- Check that the main habitation control is switched on.
- Check the physical leisure-battery isolator.
- Confirm that the control panel is in the correct operating mode.
- Check whether individual circuits have separate switches.
- Look for a battery-protection or storage-mode setting.
Some motorhome control panels can isolate selected circuits while leaving others active. Refer to the instructions for the specific panel where available.

2. The Leisure Battery Is Flat
A discharged leisure battery is one of the most common reasons a campervan’s 12V equipment stops working.

3. The Leisure Battery Has Failed
A battery can show a reasonable voltage while resting but lose voltage rapidly when a load is applied.
This is common with ageing or damaged lead-acid, AGM and gel batteries.
Possible symptoms include:
- The battery appears to charge unusually quickly
- It becomes flat soon after charging
- Lights work but larger appliances cut out
- The voltage drops sharply when the water pump starts
- The system works only while a charger is operating
- Usable capacity has gradually reduced
- The battery has repeatedly been discharged deeply
- The casing is swollen, damaged or leaking
A battery test should consider how it behaves during charging and under load, not only its resting voltage.

4. A Lithium Battery Has Entered Protection Mode
Most lithium iron phosphate leisure batteries contain a battery-management system, commonly called a BMS.
The BMS may disconnect the battery because of:
- Excessive discharge
- Excessive charge voltage
- High current
- Short circuit
- Low-temperature charging
- High battery temperature
- Cell imbalance
- An internal fault
When this happens, the battery may appear completely dead even though it still contains some stored energy.
Depending on the battery, it may need:
- A compatible charger
- A reset procedure
- A wake-up signal
- The load to be removed
- The temperature to return to a safe range
- Manufacturer-specific diagnosis
Do not bypass the BMS or connect power directly to internal battery terminals.
If the battery repeatedly enters protection mode, the cause needs identifying. It may involve an unsuitable charger, excessive load, damaged cable or an incorrectly configured system.
5. The Main Battery Fuse Has Blown
A main fuse is normally installed close to the leisure battery’s positive connection.
If this fuse blows, most or all of the habitation electrical system may stop working.

- A loose connection
- Water entering electrical equipment

Manufacturer guidance emphasises correct cable sizing, suitable connections and secure terminals because every poor connection adds resistance to the system.
9. Poor Negative or Earth Connection
The negative side of a 12V circuit is just as important as the positive supply.
Some systems return directly to a negative busbar. Others use suitable chassis connections for some circuits.
A poor negative connection can cause:
- Lights flickering
- Appliances operating intermittently
- Water pumps running slowly
- Control panels resetting
- Voltage readings changing unpredictably

Longer cables and higher currents increase voltage loss, while loose or corroded contacts add further resistance. High voltage drop can cause equipment shutdown, undercharging and cable heating.
Diagnosis normally requires measuring voltage:
- At the battery
- At the distribution point
- At the appliance
- While the circuit is operating under load
Measuring the system with everything switched off may not reveal the problem.
Victron’s guidance recommends selecting cable size based on current and total cable length, rather than simply copying the cable used in another installation.
11. The Control Panel Has Lost Power
Factory-built motorhomes and professionally converted campervans often use a central control panel.
The panel may operate:
- Lighting
- Water pump
- Tank-level displays
- Battery selection
- Charging information
- Master 12V switching
- Electric step
- Heating controls
- Auxiliary outputs
If the panel is blank, possible causes include:
- Main battery supply missing
- Blown panel fuse

When connected to mains hook-up, the battery charger may raise the system voltage enough for the equipment to operate.
When hook-up is removed, the system is left relying on a battery that may be:

- Deteriorated
- Disconnected
- Poorly connected
- In BMS protection
- Isolated from the distribution system
- Unable to support the required current
The charger may therefore be masking the underlying battery fault.

Do not open a mains charger or 230V consumer unit unless you are competent to work on mains systems.

Where habitation equipment works only while the engine is running, the vehicle charging system may be supporting the leisure circuits directly.

- Failed leisure battery
- Disconnected leisure battery

- Habitation equipment connected to the wrong side of the system

Habitation equipment should not normally depend solely on the engine running.
